The Horse You Came In On professes to be the country’s oldest continuously operating saloon. Established in 1775, this Fell’s Point bar served its waterfront neighborhood before, during, and after prohibition. It claims the distinction of being the last place Edgar Allen Poe was seen before his mysterious death in 1849. Patrons can climb up on a saddle-shaped barstool to enjoy their drinks, food, and sometimes, live music. Regulars have the opportunity to buy and store their own bottle of Jack Daniels onsite.

Stories

Edgar Allen Poe moved to the Fell’s Point neighborhood in Baltimore after leaving West Point Academy.  Poe reportedly haunted a number of bars in the neighborhood before his death, but after his death, The Horse (as it’s known to locals) laid claim to his ghost. Staff and patrons have reported white “orbs” of light flying through the air. flung barstools, and mysterious voices. It’s been reported that bartenders leave out a glass of cognac that is emptied, cleaned and put away by morning. Sometimes the spirit is seen walking down Thames Street from the Wharf Rat to the Horse.
